I-9 Updates – Small mistakes can really be a big deal
Important Changes to Form I-9 Compliance
Employers have long been required to verify the identity and work authorization of every new hire using Form I-9. While the requirement itself is nothing new, recent changes to federal enforcement guidance have significantly increased the consequences of common administrative mistakes.
Earlier this year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) expanded the list of errors that are now considered substantive violations rather than technical, correctable mistakes. As a result, omissions that previously could be fixed without penalty may now expose employers to substantial civil fines.

- How the Form I-9 audit process works,
- The most significant changes to ICE’s compliance guidance,
- The types of errors that now carry financial penalties,
- How fines are calculated, and,
- Practical steps employers can take now to reduce their risk before an audit occurs.
