New Janitorial Industry Regulations have Far-Reaching Implications for other Employers – Including You!

The passage of AB 1978 (Property Service Workers Protection Act) creates new requirements for janitorial employers, including new record-keeping requirements, annual registration with the Department of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), and providing biennial, in-person training on sexual violence and harassment prevention. As of July 1, 2018, all janitorial service businesses are required to register with the DLSE. The Department will maintain a public database of registered employers.

If your business provides janitorial services, please feel free to contact our office for more details on how to make sure you are compliant with the new laws, visit learnacademy.org.

How this Affects your Organization, even if your Industry has Nothing to do with Janitorial Services:

Any person or entity that contracts with a janitorial business that lacks a current and valid registration at the time of hiring (or renewal of the contract) is subject to civil fines of $2,000 – $10,000 for the first violation, and $10,000 – $25,000 for any subsequent violations. The lesson: if you are hiring janitorial services for your organization, check the DLSE database for their current registration first! The database is supposed to be up and running by July 1, 2018. As of the date of this posting, it is not active yet, but check back frequently for updates.
